HARRISBURG - A Cumberland County man who admitted to having 900 child pornography images on a computer he took in for repair is now barred from using the Internet and "can't even have a smart phone," a prosecutor said Monday.

That online access ban will last for 12 years, Chief Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Gettle said after Kurt Matter, 54, was sentenced by Dauphin County President Judge Todd A. Hoover to 6 to 23 months in prison, plus 10 years of probation.

Matter's run-in with the law began with a trip to a computer repair shop in northern Dauphin County last April. It was there, state police said, that technicians found several dozen child porn images on the Mechanicsburg man's Dell laptop, then called the cops, who found even more.

Gettle said Matter collected the images between 2008 and his arrest. Police said personnel at the computer shop had warned him they would report anything illegal that was found on his laptop while it was under repair.

Matter pleaded guilty to all the charges filed in the case and was sentenced under a deal with prosecutors. Hoover paroled Matter immediately after Monday's sentencing hearing because he had already served his minimum jail term.

Gettle said Matter will have to register as a sex offender for life.

She praised the computer repair shop personnel for calling the police. They had no legal obligation to do so, she said.
